Inspire. In a library, people take a physical break from the chaos and noise of the outside world and focus on their purpose. I enjoy the process of shaping a space that caters to such diverse needs. With computers and comfort, tablets and textbooks, with wikis and websites and words, it is my hope to create a learning commons where people can become completely engrossed in their task at hand.
Balance tradition and technology. The role of the librarian and the library continues to evolve and people are always learning new ways to manipulate and make use of information both on screens and with their hands. A successful library will provide a balance between books, traditional resources and the latest trends in educational technology.
Build a thoughtful and thorough collection. A library is home to a plethora of resources for both pleasure and research. Therefore, it is imperative that the materials are evaluated often and organized effectively. Using a research-based collection development approach, a librarian should ensure that materials are interesting, relevant and expansive.
Promote teaching and learning as a collaborative endeavor. Teachers are learners, and all students bring their own knowledge and experiences to the classroom. Establishing a library climate that values these relationships is crucial. Through co-teaching, collaboration and communication, I can collect and create lessons and resources that are engaging and catered to unique class needs.
Create a global community of learners. Our global population is growing, yet we are closer to each other than ever before. Students can now diplomas without setting foot in a classroom and submit work with a click. It is essential that a library provide the tools and training necessary for every student to participate fully in the digital world.
Encourage ethical and effective information usage and retrieval. As information access continues to expand, it’s important to consider how we encourage and teach the appropriate use of information. It is complex and mess, but by teaching realistic research and writing techniques, we can ensure that students understand information ethics and fair use for both academic and personal use.
